Nirvana Hall of Remembrance 涅槃追思堂
Nirvana Hall of Remembrance is an online memorial hall based in Singapore. Families create a memorial page for a loved one who has passed away, share it with relatives anywhere in the world, and make traditional Chinese offerings such as incense, joss paper, hell bank notes, paper cars and paper mansions. Each offering is burned as $MERIT, a cryptocurrency on the Ethereum blockchain, so every act of remembrance is a permanent public record, much as burning joss paper releases an offering to the afterlife.
How it works
- Find your loved one. Search the hall for their memorial page, or create one in a few minutes. A memorial is published once registered (S$7 a year, or S$21 for 99 years), and can be shared with family.
- Choose your offerings. Burn one straight away, or add several to a parcel (包袱) and send them together.
- Address the seal. Your name, your relationship and the occasion are written on a yellow parcel seal in the traditional three columns, with the correct title (such as 显考 for a father or 显妣 for a mother) and the lunar date. How the seal is written.
- Watch it burn. The $MERIT is permanently destroyed on Ethereum, and the offering appears on the memorial page with the sender's name, for the whole family to see. Every burn can be checked on Etherscan.
Offerings and prices
- Traditional offerings from S$3: devotional incense and candles, gold and silver joss paper, mandarin oranges, paper shoes, a folded paper lotus, and an unsent letter that is never stored.
- Paper clothes, lotus lanterns, flowers, tea and wine, bird's nest and ginseng, from S$5 to S$7.
- Hell bank notes (冥钞) from S$3 to S$100.
- Larger offerings: paper phones from S$12, paper cars from S$28 to S$68, a Rolex or Hermès Birkin at S$58, gold ingots at S$78, and a paper mansion at S$88.
- The 49-Day Incense Vigil (四十九日供香) at S$49: one stick of incense burned each day through to the 49th day (七七).
- Joint offerings (合祭) to a husband and wife together, with both names on the seal.
- Festival foods in season: tangyuan for the Winter Solstice, rice dumplings for Duanwu and mooncakes for Mid-Autumn.
Prices are charged in Singapore dollars. Every S$1 of an offering burns 1,000,000,000 $MERIT.
When families make offerings
On the 7th day (头七), the 49th day (七七), the 100th day (百日) and the first anniversary (对年) after a death; at Qingming (清明节); during the Hungry Ghost Festival (中元节); at the Double Ninth or Chung Yeung Festival (重阳节); at the Winter Solstice (冬至) and Lunar New Year; and on birthdays and death anniversaries. About $MERIT
